F. Ames Smith Jr. MD
Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1984. He received his surgical training at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston which he completed in 1990. He joined a busy general surgery group in Austin Texas and practiced general surgery there from 1990 to 2012, with a sub-specialty in breast surgery from 2008 on. He was recruited to Seattle in 2012 as Director of Breast Surgery for the Polyclinic and led that department through 2022. While there, he established and led the Polyclinic Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic. The purpose of this clinic was to identify and manage men and women with high risk for various types of cancer on the basis of genetic predisposition. He received further intensive genetics education and certification through the City of Hope in 2019, and is part of the Clinical Cancer Genomics Community of Practice. He and his wife, Dr. Charlotte H. Smith (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) moved to Northern Idaho in 2022, and he established Physician Specialists Northwest soon after that.
He has dedicated his practice exclusively to managing patients (both men and women) with high risk for cancer, especially those with a hereditary (inherited genetic) predisposition to cancer. This has been a focus of his practice for the last 16 years. He works collaboratively with other local and regional providers including breast surgeons Dr. Rhiana Menen and Carrie Newton. He shares an office with Lake City PT who specialize in women’s health (including oncology, pelvic floor issues, and lymphedema). He is available for office visits as well as telehealth (licensed in Texas, Washington, and Idaho).
